After following the news reports of the new coronavirus, I discovered a fascinating phenomenon. CNN and Fox News, as representatives of the two parties, produced utterly different opposing views when spreading the news, which formed the solidification of the two parties’ adherents. This information solidification is precisely the information cocoon effect people are experiencing in this Big Data era.
People’s information field is habitually guided by their interests, thus turning their lives from shackles to cocoons. In my artwork cocoons19, I use the phenomenon of the “information cocoon room” to show how human behavior is affected by information in the era of big data. I integrated the information and videos of political news from CNN and Fox to construct a mutually opposed information cocoon. This work explores how the media utilizes images and text to create a new narrative which helped build up an information cocoon during the COVID-19 pandemic.
